Links to the Avon Cycleway
We have details below of five links to the Avon Cycleway from Bristol. They join the cycleway at Chew Valley, Mangotsfield, Felton, Priestwood and Shirehampton.
Do let us know of any others that you think would be of interest.
Chew Valley Link
From Queen Square to join the main Avon Cycleway at Chew Valley Lake and cafe.
Care is needed going through the Temple Gate area. The route is fiddly in places but follows NCN 3, so look out for the signs. There are a couple of moderate traffic sections in the Brislington area.
Clifton link
Connects Clifton to Avon Cycleway at Felton.
Go out through Ashton Court to Festival Way, but avoiding the very confusing section through housing estates. Then via lanes with a couple modest hills to Felton. Can be used in conjunction with the Clevedon and Pensford/Saltford loops.
East Bristol link
All along the first part of the Bristol to Bath cyclepath, starting at Trinity Street. Joins the Avon Ccyleway at the old Mangotsfield Station.
This is a very busy route and some regulars go faster than they should. Take care, especially around bends. Use your bell!
Filton link
Links Castle Park in Bristol City Centre to the main route at Priestwood, east of Milbury Heath.
The route follows quiet roads and some cyclepaths, going through quirky St Werburghs with its Urban Farm and self build zone. It passes close to Parkway Station. A slightly less complicated alternative in this area is to follow Westfield Lane, then L and then R past the Station and then R into North Road to join the Filton Link.
Soon after Stoke Gifford, Old Gloucester Road is followed via Earthcott, Itchington and Tytherington. Then a climb via Baden Hill to join the main route.
This loop can be used in conjunction with the Commons Loop (out leg) and Easter Compton Loop (in leg).
Portway link
There is an excellent cyclway all along the Portway to the M5 bridge, where you cross at the traffic lights turn left and then immediately right. You then join the Avon Cycleway West over the M5 bridge, or East through Lawrence Weston on the way to Hallen.
I’m starting this link at the Create Centre; it’s a good place to meet for the start of a number of different rides out to Avonmouth, Pill, West to Clevedon or South to the Mendips.
